Regardless of what we might think in terms of likelihood or whether they're kosher or not, things just keep getting weirder in our (allegedly) erstwhile Republic.

But take heart! Or at least your hosts did; in one recent piece of good news, a relic of the Prohibition era's MO was undone when the Trump Administration moved to de-schedule/re-schedule cannabis from Schedule 1. While previously ranked in a category of drugs so severe (like heroin) as to purportedly have no medicinal value and thus difficult to even study, marijuana now finds itself in a kinder, gentler category. Being Schedule 3/III/Three loosens up some of the rules restricting academia from learning some of the longer-term effects. This is actually of massive import to your hosts, Crazy Eddie Magic & Sailor Jack D., as now we will be able to eventually learn of the mental health impacts (for example) of consuming today's supercharged weed strains. One thing's for sure: today's weed is much more potent than the kind wafting about the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when POTUS Nixon made his infamous solo visit to talk football and politics with the Hippies who hung out there 24/7.

Yes, madness does appear to at times reign supreme and certainly seems to be spreading. While AI-induced psychosis (yes, this is a thing) and our so-called "Leadership" alike aren't helping matters all that much, there is hope. People grow ever more aware and are becoming ever more weary of the litany of woes our elected government seems disinterested in doing much about.

The silver lining, though, is in the growing urge amongst the Masses to Vote the Bums Out!

Additionally, with her immense experience in catastrophe management/response in the private sector paired with nigh-unparalleled qualification through any quantifiable measure, your hosts (Crazy Eddie Magic & Jack) deem her the perfect guest to elaborate on both the numerous crises facing society as well as how we can go about shaping our priorities in addressing "All of the Above" in the future.

Whether it's driving across the East Coast in search of a U.S. Representative and Senator as-of-yet unawares of the massive, collective plight of their constituents or burning the midnight petrol in completing mission-critical documentation for homeowners amidst disaster, Mariel cares and can readily make the case on why you should, too (not dissimilar from "rising tides lift all boats", to a degree -- simple, yet accurate in many senses).

Been a bit of a Peyton Place in certain spots in the Administration, it would seem, and we (with Mariel in tow) are here for it.

While AI can be a positive tool, the seemingly haphazard, solely profit-driven approach to developing this potentially across-the-board game-changing technology has been poorly communicated. This of course adds insult to the injuries of environmental blight and the aforementioned employment-related issues.

War with Iran in concert with the State of Israel combined with worsening domestic political violence make for a dreary backdrop for the upcoming World Cup, not to mention America's own 250th birthday as a Nation.

We appreciate you welcoming us back into your lives each time out, and we hope to be of source of both good, credible information and discourse as well as a point of encouragement. There are honest folks out there in the media, who want to discuss the truth, to have those discussions in a thoughtful, respectful yet surgical way, as well as to hold our leaders accountable. And on that point, there is much to discuss in terms of the accounting.

Episode 305: Episode 304: Noem No Mo' & The Return of (Mo') Red Ink

For the longest, one of the unofficial mantras of the 2nd Trump Administration ("Trump 2.0" as the Cool Kids have dubbed it) has been "no scalps" -- meaning no handing out wins to the Mainstream Media, any Democrats in either House of the U.S. Congress or even some members of their own Republican Party.

As per Sneaky Pete, "never drop the con" -- even when you're wrong, you're not. You're simply moving "the Best" people selected to work in the Administration to another Castle with another Princess, Marios. Now-former U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi's following now-former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem out the door. Granted, Bondi didn't happen in time for us to address it on here, but the song remains the same: the first, indeed, scalps belong to women. You know what they said about Guest Stars wearing red on the original Star Trek and all? Well, they were always gonna be first, put it to you that way.

Crazy Eddie Magic & his counterpart, Sailor Jack, then discuss the banning of THC vapes in the State of Texas; they failed to get the 7-OH, vapes, candies, etc. (i.e., everything) banned last year due to a veto from Governor Greg Abbott. Apparently, the Governor took issue with eliminating thousands of jobs and affecting a several-billion dollar industry simply because the Lieutenant Governor (Dan Patrick) apparently has no self-control and was afraid he'd be tempted to buy drugs (legal or otherwise) for he and his teenage son on the way home from picking him up at school. Now, mind you, there's no word on whether he shares the same concern for hard liquor and the possibility that people might buy it for their underaged little brothers, et al.

Episode 304: Episode 303: The Devil's (Still) In The Details

There are too many gauntlets to run in too little time; Episode 303 of ModState's flagship podcast finds your hosts ("Crazy Eddie" Magic and "Sailor Jack" D) navigating lots of terrain, some trickier than others.

From another dive into AI (was Cortana absorbed by the "JEDI" program at the US Department of War?) to the black market for cannabis (exacerbated by some sky-high taxes in some American states) to the global, Hydra-like reach of the US Dollar, your duo covers an immense amount of ground here. With Argentina already the beneficiary of US Government financial "outreach", they've now opted to move their economy closer to that of their American allies by more closely embracing the US Dollar. That much was established, and so your hosts only touch on that briefly; what was not previously known was the apparent backroom wheeling and dealing that finds Russia (yes, the one headed by President Vladimir Putin) apparently contemplating underpinning its economy (or at least a huge portion of the involved transactions) via the US Dollar as well.

While this would be a massive, watershed moment, we cannot say for certain whether or not that is the case. However, it would explain the protracted nature of a conflict (the War in Ukraine) that is beleaguered by peace talks that remain bogged down. The Devil is truly in the details, some of which would find Russia receiving extensive financial sanctions relief in exchange for more closely underpinning heretofore unspecified aspects of its economy by way of US Dollar-denominated transactions.

Were these developments to pan out, not only would it fundamentally rewrite the script for ending the conflict in Eastern Europe but it would also make servicing the ballooning US Federal debt a less painful task. There's a lot to unpack here, and we will surely return to this topic in the days and episodes ahead.

As a personal aside, Eddie Magic's parents celebrated their Ruby (40th) wedding anniversary, a milestone most marriages never reach. Congratulations are in order, to be sure!

Episode 303: Episode 30too: Cute is What We Aim For

For as long as is reasonably possible, we'll try and keep this as light as we can.

Some of the subject matter makes this a lot tougher at times than others, and while we'd rather focus on the pros and cons of AI and its macroeconomic impacts, we'd also be remiss to not review things like (former Prince) Andrew being arrested. We vowed not to obsess over the JE Library / not to bring it up in lieu of a major development, and given the reality this whole sequence of ignominious events could bring down The (British) Crown, we'd say that qualifies.

If it's "just" andrew mountbatten windsor having leaked insider trading-type information (albeit from nearly the pinnacle of UK power) for the financial benefit of JE Epstein and their fellow ne'er-do-wells, the Crown likely survives.

However, if this puppy turns into a drip-drip-drip-drip of news worsening daily? Even removing him from their formal line of succession may not prevent No10 Downing from hosting dialogues of a more existential variety regarding the Crown's future.

Episode 302: Episode 301: Calm Amidst the Storm(s)

Returning for Episode 301, "Crazy Eddie" Matuk & "Sailor Jack" DeViney kick the new year into high gear by going over the numbers, nuts and bolts of just how much AI is NOT revolutionizing the economy. Neither one of them are naysaying the tech, which has limitless potential, but neither is naive enough to be blind optimists about it, either. Taking a middle-of-the-road, pragmatic approach, they question just how much money the firms involved are saving when they fire thousands of people only to pour billions into data centers that not only cost massive amounts of money to launch but also further untold millions to maintain.

While there's still much to come on the subject, they remain agreed largely that Artificial Intelligence won't replace workers (much less work itself) but will change and greatly augment work itself. As opposed to eliminating strain and stress on the job, it is likely to exacerbate it given its potential benefits for productivity.

In addition to a sweeping wrap-up of some current events odds and ends around America and Earth at-large, they close with a cautionary, realistic assessment of the multimedia library published by the United States Department of Justice as pertains to the Jeffrey Epstein "files". While the e-mail correspondence contained therein is rife with asides and possible references to potentially ghastly events and horrifying social gatherings, one big takeaway from this should be that we don't know much of anything for certain about most of the people involved. While Epstein himself was a convicted sex offender, names such as Woody Allen and Elon Musk may be tough to miss and even tougher to ignore, their names being mentioned in the correspondence and/or their being participants in correspondence does not in and of itself make them guilty of similar crimes.

The duo, Mr. Matuk III and Mr. DeViney, feel the bottom line, at this time, is that the Jeffrey Epstein library (available for public viewing by those aged 18 years and older [perhaps the ultimate irony] on the DoJ website) should be viewed with caution, yes, and also for what it is: bits and pieces and individual parts of a much larger investigation that, truly, we hope is ongoing.

AI continues to be misreported, misrepresented and misunderstood; the pair discuss what it is and what it isn't, coming to the consensus that it won't end up replacing work so much as it will change it.

Unfortunately, the conversation shifts to the ghastly turn of events in Minnesota. They couldn't NOT talk about what happened, as much as they'd rather it hadn't.

As ModState preps to meet and surpass a milestone it wasn't sure would come (the 300 mark) in the first place, Crazy Eddie and his counterpart (Sailor Jack) reconvene for a less structured, more relaxed look at some of the things that define America in this day and age. While both men love America, Her Republic and Her People very much, there nonetheless remain some things that could be better. There are some trends in our society (with regard, specifically, to our treatment of one another as People, as human beings) that need to go away and/or shift significantly.

Following someone in traffic to bust their window or verbally accost them is not OK, for example. Nor is busting an old lady's window in traffic a normal brag. What's even more concerning, however, is this needing to be said in the first place.

With upwards of fifty percent of the Internet now estimated to be AI-generated slop (propagated by [you guessed it] AI "agents" [chatbots]), Edmund Matuk III (Crazy Eddie) and his co-host, (Sailor) Jack return to this developing story.

New York City mayoral race leader, Zohran Kwame Mamdani, has been reportedly on something of a private apology tour with members of the NYPD and their corresponding union. Then, called out on Fox News about his purported remorse being behind closed doors, the New York State Assemblyman offered a public mea culpa. As our leaders are inherently imperfect (being chosen from among us, imperfect beings ourselves), why isn't the public more willing to forgive the perceived failings of its leaders? Is it because we automatically assume the worst and refuse to believe any request for forgiveness to be genuine? Your co-hosts discuss these matters of the heart in an effort to ascertain where we're at as a Nation.

The duo then segues into our zero sum, binary thought processes as a society: for instance, both agree murder is wrong. We can all agree on that, right? So why can two things not be true at once? Why can one not call out the ghastly events of 07 October 2023, killings at the behest of Hamas, as being just as wrong as the subsequent innocent civilian deaths at the hands of the Israeli military? If you (the Royal "You) condemn what Hamas did, then automatically you're a Zionist with no regard for the plight of starving Palestinian babies? Or, on the other hand, if the same Royal "You" expresses consternation over the conduct of the Israeli military, then you're an anti-Semite who disregards the death of Israeli grannies? Is there no sensible framework for discussion here, no middle ground to be found? Or is this truly "the foreign policy equivalent of Roe v. Wade", just as polarizing as abortion rights in America?

With episode 300 looming not far in the future, Edmund Matuk III & Jack DeViney also discussing 1 or 2 of their upcoming guests. One of them, a dynamic woman of nigh-unparalleled insight and wisdom at so young an age, is one of the brightest minds DeViney says he's had the privilege to encounter. They also discuss inviting Representative Ocasio-Cortez (AOC [D-NY]) on and that, like another aforementioned guest, they also intend to let her complete sentences and finish her thoughts. Fancy that, right? But apparently, modern public discourse features a good many men who do not believe in showing their peers (women, in particular) the same respect they'd like to receive. SAD!

Our master of all things audio, Edmund Matuk III (Crazy Eddie), and features editor Jack DeViney meet again. This fine, gorgeous day in Upstate New York finds our two hosts revisiting a number of topics. Trending or not, we've learned a lot about our fellow Americans simply by driving, DeViney asserts. Hint: many of our fellow citizens don't just look self-absorbed and contrarian on social media....and naturally the discussion returns to the (increased) tariffs implemented by the 47th POTUS. Tariffs have long been in place in America (and most other recognizable world powers), but the President took things to levels not seen in a little more than a century.

Another sticking point for DeViney is the either disregard for or ignorance of history when it comes to the so-called Gilded Age: "while yes, otherworldly increases in wealth occurred amidst this vast transformation [that occurred in the same timeframe as the creation of the Federal Reserve System and the implementation of the Federal Income Tax], but folks seem to have forgotten one of the other main hallmarks [of the Gilded Age] right along with obscene new wealth, which was abject poverty."

Indeed, the streets of gold immigrants had heard of? They found out the hard way they didn't exist. And Hell, they might be there in places today, but they ain't for everybody.

That includes our hosts. "Stay outta Malibu, Lebowski!"

Re-emerged from their work behind the scenes, audio engineer Edmund Matuk III (Crazy Eddie) and Jon David (Jack) DeViney returns to review the tariffs at center stage. Along the way, Amazon, Microsoft, Elon Musk and, ah, yes, most certainly Apple come under renewed scrutiny. Save the "God bless America"'s and "Assembled in CA" crap and bring your jobs home (and let people pay $8,000 for a new iPhone assembled by Americans) and bring home your ex-patriated taxes before we bring them home for you. If civilians face the death penalty and we treat corporations like people, then we posit that any Firm refusing to bring their tax dollars home should face revocation of corporate charter and seizure of assets.

Otherwise, the plan has no teeth if Cook just backslaps his way to a special deal. No, we've had enough deals for mega-corporations. Ayn Rand novels are fun to read, not to live in, thank you kindly.

Mind you, this is a very pro-capitalism publication. But constrained, responsible capitalism that doesn't operate under the false assumption that there's no obligation to our society, to America, Her Republic and Her People. Again, if we're to treat corporations like people, then so be it.

Do the right thing, be heroes, and bring your jobs and tax dollars home. A bit uneven at times, perhaps, but said duo looks forward to ModState, as a publication, returning to a more frequent publishing timetable and thus ironing out any kinks fairly quickly. Thank you all for tuning in and keeping us going with your support and input.

Part one (of three, provided we find the other two), Mr. Haynes was a member of the East Orange, New Jersey police force and retired as a Staff Sergeant from the US Army. Both co-founders of this podcast had the privilege of serving with him at Walter Reed (the President's Hospital) from 2011-2013.

Happy Friday, and we hope you enjoy this perspective from before the 'Rona and the end of the War in Afghanistan as much as we did (both in 2019 and upon rediscovering it)!

Nate again asserts the weakness he sees in the supply side, while DeViney maintains that while, yes, Apple and Best Buy may have their worst two quarters on record, Duracell and Proctor Gamble may have two of their best upcoming fiscal quarters on record, and the only weakness he sees, ultimately, is the fever pitch screams of the mainstream media inciting overreaction(s).
Lastly, the team explores the politics of this matter. Is the media overblowing this? Has President Trump sounded a big enough alarm?

This episode is a discussion about the implications of data received by Cambridge Analytica. Roughly 50-87 million profiles were harvested and then used to swing cultural perspectives in the US during the 2016 election.
Nate makes the argument that political campaigns should be using social media, but unethically procuring data from millions of people without their explicit consent is problematic to say the least.
Sarah's background is in digital marketing. She elucidates upon some of the practices of how digital marketing companies target you based many different metrics.

All this while they hold the necessity for exceptional morality on a pedestal? Or is the main-stream media trying to make a bigger issue out of this while giving a pass on someone like Hillary Clinton calling inner city African American's "super-predators?" Does the what-about-ism have merit here?
Lastly, Facebook finds themselves in hot water as it is discovered that a data company "Cambridge Analytica" data mined 50 million FB users information without their consent. Worse FB knew about this and did nothing. What does this mean for the future of social media in terms of what we (as a population and consumer base) except from these tech giants?
